Automotive OEMs Form Consortium for Standardised Battery Passport Implementation

Thirteen major automotive manufacturers—including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Stellantis, Hyundai, and Toyota—have formed the Global Battery Passport Consortium to develop interoperable data standards ahead of the EU’s 2027 digital battery passport mandate. The consortium will invest €120 million in shared blockchain infrastructure for tracking battery materials from mine to end-of-life.

Data Architecture and Interoperability

The consortium’s architecture uses a decentralised data model where each supply chain participant maintains custody of their data while contributing verified credentials to a shared ledger. This approach addresses both intellectual property concerns and data sovereignty requirements across different jurisdictions.

“A battery passport is only useful if every player in the value chain speaks the same language. This consortium ensures that a battery made in Korea, assembled in Germany, and recycled in the US carries consistent, verifiable data throughout its life.”—Markus Schäfer, CTO, Mercedes-Benz
