Toyota Confirms 2027 Launch of All-Solid-State Battery for Premium EVs

Toyota Motor Corporation has confirmed a 2027 production launch for its all-solid-state battery, targeting its Lexus premium EV line. The cells deliver 750 km range with a 10-minute fast charge to 80% capacity—performance metrics that would represent a generational leap over current lithium-ion technology. Toyota holds over 1,300 solid-state battery patents, the largest portfolio of any automotive manufacturer.

Production Scale-Up Strategy

Toyota’s approach uses sulphide-based solid electrolytes manufactured through a proprietary dry-room process that the company claims reduces production costs by 40% compared to previous solid-state prototypes. Initial production will be limited to 10,000 vehicles annually at a dedicated facility in Fukuoka, scaling to 100,000 units by 2029.

The announcement increases competitive pressure across the automotive industry, with Volkswagen, BMW, and Samsung SDI all accelerating their own solid-state development timelines.
