European Battery Gigafactory Pipeline Reaches 2 TWh Planned Capacity

Europe’s battery gigafactory pipeline has reached 2 TWh of planned manufacturing capacity across 47 announced projects, according to Transport & Environment’s latest tracker. However, only 540 GWh has reached Final Investment Decision, highlighting a persistent gap between announcements and committed capital that threatens the continent’s electrification targets.

Viability Challenges

The report identifies energy costs, permitting delays, and competition from US IRA incentives as the primary barriers to project realisation. European electricity prices remain 2-3 times higher than in the US and China, eroding the cost competitiveness of domestically produced cells. Several announced projects, including Northvolt’s planned expansions, have been delayed or downsized.

Despite these headwinds, committed projects from Samsung SDI, LG Energy Solution, and CATL in Hungary, Germany, and Sweden are on track, suggesting that the European battery industry will reach approximately 800 GWh of actual production capacity by 2030.
