The European Union’s Battery Regulation has officially entered force, establishing the world’s most comprehensive framework for battery lifecycle management. The regulation mandates minimum recycled content thresholds—16% cobalt, 6% lithium, and 6% nickel by 2031—and requires 70% lithium recovery from end-of-life batteries by 2030, rising to 80% by 2032.
Industry Impact
The regulation creates a legally binding circular economy framework that applies to all batteries sold in the EU, from portable consumer cells to industrial EV packs. Battery manufacturers must implement digital battery passports tracking materials provenance, carbon footprint, and recycled content from 2027.
The regulation is expected to catalyse over €10 billion in European recycling infrastructure investment, as manufacturers scramble to secure compliant recycled material supply chains.
